Off-site backups
Backups on the server protect you from mistakes, but not from losing the server itself. Off-site backup keeps an encrypted copy of every backup somewhere else, so your websites can be recovered on another server even if the server is gone.
Off-site backup is switched on or off for a whole server, and covers every website on it. It is on by default for new servers.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”- Each backup is encrypted on the server before it leaves.
- Only what changed since the last copy is uploaded each time.
- When you turn it on, the backups the websites already have are copied too.
- Copies go to Netkeel’s off-site storage unless you use your own storage.
On a website’s Backups tab, a backup with an off-site copy shows Off-site copy. While a copy is uploading it shows Copying off-site. If an upload fails, Netkeel retries it on its own (Off-site copy will retry). After repeated failures it shows Off-site copy needs attention.
Turn off-site backup on or off
Section titled “Turn off-site backup on or off”- Open Servers and choose the server.
- Open the Backups section.
- In the Off-site backup panel, click Turn on or Turn off, then confirm.
The panel shows the Status, where copies are Stored in, and the Price.
You can also see at a glance whether it is on: the server’s overview shows Off-site backup on or off.
You cannot turn it off while a backup is being copied off-site. Try again a few minutes later.
What it costs
Section titled “What it costs”Copies in Netkeel’s off-site storage cost $0.03 per GB a month, from the first GB. Netkeel measures how much you store each day and charges the average over the month. The charge appears on your monthly bill as Off-site backup storage. See Billing and invoices.
Backups kept only on the server cost nothing extra. Copies kept in your own bucket are not charged by Netkeel; your storage provider bills you for them.
Backups that exist only off-site
Section titled “Backups that exist only off-site”A backup can lose its copy on the server, for example when a website moves to another server. Its off-site copy is then all that is left, and the list shows Off-site only. You can download and restore it like any other backup. Netkeel brings it back from off-site storage first.
When you delete a website, its off-site copies are kept for 30 days at no charge, then deleted. Until then you can download them or restore the website from Recently deleted at the bottom of Websites.
Who can change it
Section titled “Who can change it”The workspace owner and super admins can turn off-site backup on or off. Collaborators do not see server pages.
