How Netkeel works

Netkeel is managed hosting on your own private cloud servers. You choose a server, Netkeel installs and runs everything on it, and you put as many websites on it as it can handle.

Netkeel has two building blocks.

  • A server is a private cloud server (a VPS) from Vultr, DigitalOcean or Akamai Cloud (Linode), in the region and size you choose. Each server runs one managed stack: Nginx (or Nginx with Apache), PHP, MariaDB and Redis.
  • A website lives on one of your servers. It has its own files, database, backups, PHP version and settings. Websites on the same server are isolated from each other.

You create servers on the Servers page and add websites to them from the Websites page or from a server’s page. Adding a website never creates a server and never costs extra: it uses a server you already pay for.

On every server, Netkeel:

  • installs the stack and keeps PHP versions up to date
  • runs a firewall and automatically bans addresses after repeated failures
  • watches the server’s services and uptime, and lets you restart a service from the panel
  • takes automatic backups of each website, with encrypted off-site copies if you want them
  • issues and renews free SSL certificates for your domains

Each server runs a small Netkeel agent that carries out the work and reports back. It updates itself.

You keep developer access to each website through SFTP, and SSH when you switch it on. Logins are per website and never root.

Each server is billed for the hours it exists, from when you create it until you delete it, and never more than its monthly price. The panel shows both the hourly price and the monthly cap before you create a server. Your card is charged once a month for the hours used. Upgrading a server changes its rate once the resize is done, and deleting a server stops its billing at the end of that hour. Websites cost nothing extra. The only other charge is optional off-site backup storage at $0.03 per GB a month in Netkeel’s off-site storage.

  2. Add your first website
  3. Take your website live
