Password protection

Password protection puts a sign-in box in front of the whole website. Visitors see nothing until they enter the username and password you choose. It is handy while a site is being built or reviewed by a client.

Open the website and go to Hosting › Password & access.

  1. Click the Password protection switch.
  2. Netkeel fills in the username visitor and a generated password. Change either if you like:
    • Username: 3 to 32 letters, numbers, dots, dashes or underscores.
    • Password: 8 to 128 characters. Click Generate for a new random one.
  3. Click Turn on protection.

Share the username and password with the people who should see the website.

While protection is on, the card shows the Username and Password. Click the eye to show the password and the copy button to copy either value.

To change them, click Change username or password, edit the fields and click Save changes. Anyone using the old password is asked to sign in again.

Click the switch and confirm Turn off protection. The website is public again, and the saved username and password are removed.

  • Google PageSpeed can’t open a protected website, so the Loading speed card on the overview can’t test it while protection is on.
  • When you clone a website or move it to another server, its password protection goes with it.

On the same page, SSH/SFTP allowed addresses controls who can sign in with this website’s SSH keys.

  1. Type one IP address or range per line, for example 203.0.113.10 or 198.51.100.0/24. You can add up to 20.
  2. Click Save.

Leave the list empty to allow every address. The page shows your current address and warns you if it isn’t in the list.

To block traffic to your websites, use the server’s firewall instead. See Firewall and SSH.
