Restore a backup

Restoring replaces the website’s current files, database or both with the contents of a backup. Changes made since that backup are lost, so Netkeel takes a safety backup of the website first.

  1. Open Websites, choose the website and open the Backups tab.
  2. Find the backup you want and click Restore.
  3. Choose Full website.
  4. Read the summary, tick I understand that changes made since this backup are lost., then click Restore full website.

The files and the database are both replaced.

  1. On the Backups tab, click Restore next to the backup.
  2. Choose Files or database only.
  3. Select All website files, Database, or both. Each one shows its size in the backup.
  4. Click Restore selected.

Each choice restores that part completely. For example, choosing Database puts back the whole database as it was at the time of the backup, and leaves the files as they are now.

The restore runs in the background, and you can follow it under the bell icon at the top of the panel. In order, Netkeel:

  1. Checks the backup before anything is replaced.
  2. Brings the backup back from off-site storage, if it no longer exists on the server.
  3. Takes a safety backup of the website as it is now. It appears in the list as a Recovery point.
  4. Restores what you selected.

If the restore was a mistake, restore the recovery point to get back to where you were.

  • A backup marked Damaged cannot be restored. If its check failed for a temporary reason, open its menu and choose Check integrity again.
  • Only one restore or import can run on a website at a time. Wait for the current one to finish.
  • Backups of an imported website archive restore files and database together, so Files or database only is not offered for them.
  • Collaborators cannot restore backups. Ask the workspace owner or a super admin. See Team members.
